About Ethiopia
The third most populous country in Africa, Ethiopia is among the world's oldest Christian nations, and the only African state to never be colonized. Addis Ababa is not a wealthy city, but is a rich and vibrant home to many cultures. It is the official diplomatic capital of Africa with more than 90 embassies and consular representatives, which makes it the 4th largest diplomatic center in the world. This is a prime location for impacting young lives for Jesus Christ.

About Young Life
Young Life is a non-denominational, Christian organization committed to impacting kid's lives and preparing them for the future. Since its inception in 1941, Young Life has been introducing adolescents to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith, while providing strong, positive influences in their lives. Over the past 60+ years, Young Life has spread to high schools, junior highs and college campuses in every US state and in over 40 countries. Young Life has been in Ethiopia since 1998 and is a well-established and trusted NGO. In that short time, they have impacted thousands of teenagers for Christ.

Our Inaugural Trip
In July 2006 we sent a team of spiritually adventurous people with a heart for the lost to Addis Ababa. The team consisted of teenagers and adult leaders from CFC’s Student Ministry and from Young Life in York County. They spent 14 life-changing days in the capital city, Addis Ababa and in the nearby town of Nazaret. Throughout the course of the trip, they had an opportunity to experience the local culture, see the reality of third world poverty and interact with young children at a local orphanage. The most rewarding experience, however, was serving the Young Life leaders during two of their outreach camps in which over 80 kids came to Christ.

We are thrilled about our future partnership with Young Life in Addis Ababa. Our upcoming mission to Ethiopia will include not only students but every demographic of our church. As we live beyond ourselves and serve God in obedience we are confident that he will guide each detail of this important partnership. If you would like to be involved in future missions to Addis Ababa please contact Jason Craig, jcraigcfc@verizon.net or 299-6505 ext. 106

Impact New Orleans
CFC has been partnering with Tammany Oaks Church of Christ, Mandeville, LA this year in an effort to help with the clean up of the devastating hurricane Katrina which hit the area last year. We have sent two teams there to date working in the Chalmette area of New Orleans. There is still much work to be done and the work will likely continue for four or five more years.

Since Tammany Oaks is suspending its ministry, we will now be partnering with a downtown New Orleans Church, Carrollton Avenue Church of Christ. Our first team heads to this church Thanksgiving week, 2006. This effort is called, "Operation Nehemiah." The church has already hosted more than 7000 volunteers, gutted and cleaned over 1700 homes and distributed food, beds, appliances and furniture to over 10,000 people. There is still much to be done. Please contact Don Lennon, dlennon117@aol.com if you have any questions.

IMPACTING LANCASTER: WATER STREET RESCUE MISSION
CFC's partnership with the WSRM is growing on many levels:

Corporate encounter
We continue to plan for joint CFC/WSRM events, whether downtown or on Bethel Drive. These big-group encounters offer us the chance to experience outreach together. Newcomers to CFC can visit the Mission, perhaps for the first time, and serve with other folks from CFC. If you'd like to get involved in planning and manning the next all-CFC event, the Discovery Kiosk Host will help you connect with Daral Boles.

Small group serving
There are many opportunities for community groups to serve together at Water Street, whether it's literally serving (a meal), wrapping Christmas gifts for residents, or painting a resident hallway. For more information, see the WSRM contact information below.

Individual volunteer opportunities
Just to highlight a few of the many ways to serve on your own, with a friend, or with your family...
  • Mentoring: This year-long program pairs residents with individuals from the community who provide much-needed encouragement, support, and spiritual guidance to mentorees during their stay in the Mission and beyond.

  • Teen Haven/Wonder Club: There are many opportunities to serve in these community-based programs, from practicing English as a Second Language with 3 to 5-year-olds in Wonder Club to helping in Teen Haven's after-school and evening programs.

  • Tutoring in the Learning Center: Volunteers help residents work towards their GED or acquire other skills that prepare them for employment.

  • Administrative help: Help behind the scenes with data processing and clerical assistance.

If you've never volunteered downtown before, why not...
Go with a friend. Make plans to serve together.
Go with a group. Get your community group involved.
Serve with your kids. Learn to serve together.
